Astheskyturneddark,loudclapsofthunderechoedthroughthevalley.Thewindstartedtopickupandtreesswayedviolently.Thebirdsflewfranticallyseekingrefuge.Thefirstdropletsofrainfellheavilyontheground,followedbymoreandmoreuntilitturnedintoadownpour.Suddenly,aboltoflightningstruck,lightinguptheskyandeverythingaroundit.Thiswasthestartofafiercethunderstormthatwouldtestthebraveryofmanyandleavealastingimpressiononthem.Inasmallvillagesituatedatthefootofamountain,peopleweregoingabouttheirdailyroutineswhenthestormhit.Thevillagersrushedtotheirhomestotakeshelterfromthedownpour.Thundershookthegroundandlightningilluminatedthevillage.Everylivingcreaturewasafraid,exceptforone.HernamewasMei.Shewasknownforherbraveryandquickthinking,whichwouldsoonprovetobeinvaluable.Meiwasmakingherwaybackhomefromthemarketwhenthestormhit.Shehadheardthedistantrumbleofthunderandknewshehadtohurry.Shehadjustreachedherfrontdoorwhentheskyopenedupandrainpoureddowninsheets.Shequicklylitalampandsatdowntowaitforthestormtopass.

AsMeiwaited,sheheardaloudknockingatherdoor.Shehesitatedbeforeopeningit,unsureofwhocouldbeoutsideinsuchbadweather.Whensheopenedthedoor,shesawherneighbor,Mrs.Chen,drenchedtotheboneandshiveringwithfear.Mrs.ChenhadbeencaughtoutsideinthestormandwasnowseekingrefugeinMei'shome.Meiwelcomedherinwithouthesitation,knowingthatitwasbettertohelpthoseinneedthantoturnthemaway.Mrs.Chenwasn'ttheonlyoneseekingrefuge.Soon,othervillagersbeganarrivingatMei'shome,seekingshelterfromthestorm.Theywereallterrifiedandclungtoeachother,hopingforthestormtopassquickly.Meitookchargeandstartedtopreparefoodandblanketsforeveryone.AsMeiwaspreparingfood,aboltoflightningstruckoutside,causingaloudbangthatshookthehouse.Thevillagersallscreamedinfear,andsomeevenstartedtocry.Meiremainedcalmandcontinuedtocomfortthem,tellingthemthateverythingwouldbeokay.Suddenly,thepowerwentout,leavingthehouseincompletedarkness.Thevillagersallhuddledtogether,afraidofwhatwastocome.Meilitacandleandheldituptoherface,castingeerieshadowsonthewalls.Sheknewthattheyneededlightandstartedlightingmorecandlesaroundtheroom.
